Trial commences for Texas altercation involving ‘Trump Train’ convoy on highway

Former Democratic lawmaker Wendy Davis testified in a federal court in Austin on the first day of a civil trial against six Trump supporters who allegedly participated in an orchestrated attack on a Biden-Harris campaign bus days before the 2020 election. Davis filmed the convoy of Trump supporters weaving close to the bus while fellow passengers called 911 for help. The plaintiffs claim they were intimidated and felt threatened by the actions of the Trump supporters, while the defense argues that the drivers were showing support for their candidate in a peaceful manner.

The lawsuit accuses the defendants of violating the Ku Klux Klan Act, a federal law aimed at preventing political violence and intimidation. The trial, which is expected to last two to three weeks, seeks unspecified monetary damages for the plaintiffs. The judge denied the defendants’ motion for summary judgment, ruling that the KKK Act prohibits physical intimidation even when racial bias is not a factor.

The encounter on the highway prompted an FBI investigation and led former President Trump to declare that the Trump supporters did nothing wrong. The lawsuit also alleges that the police failed to respond adequately to the 911 calls made during the incident. The trial will continue with cross-examination of witnesses and further arguments from both sides as they seek to determine the outcome of the case.
