A 24-year-old hiker was found dead on the Marufo Vega Trail in Big Bend National Park after rangers launched a search when they noticed the hiker’s parked vehicle had not been moved for several days. The rugged 14-mile trail has no shade or water, making it dangerous during warmer times of the year. The hiker’s body was removed by helicopter, and park staff expressed their condolences to the hiker’s family and friends. Despite being late October, temperatures in the desert areas of Big Bend National Park have been soaring, with highs near 100 degrees each afternoon. The park service warned of the extreme heat in the area as they investigate the tragic incident.
