Family from Ohio files lawsuit against nursing home following death of mother from pressure wound

An Ohio woman, Lucy Garcia, died due to an infected pressure wound while receiving care at the Arbors at Oregon nursing home. Her family has filed a lawsuit against the facility, alleging negligence and recklessness in her care. Garcia, who was heavily reliant on staff at the nursing home due to a stroke, was left in soiled diapers for extended periods of time, resulting in bedsores and ultimately sepsis. The lawsuit claims that the facility did not have enough staff or properly trained staff to care for residents, and attempted to cover up incidents of neglect and abuse by logging bedsores as different types of wounds. Despite efforts to treat the wound, Garcia’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she ultimately died as a result of the neglect she experienced while at the facility. The lawsuit seeks at least $25,000 in damages, arguing that the nursing home prioritized profits over the well-being of residents like Garcia. Garcia’s family describes her as the center of their family unit, leaving behind four sons, 17 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. The family hopes that the lawsuit will hold the nursing home accountable for Garcia’s death and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
