Students in Richardson ISD recently participated in a cardboard challenge as part of an advanced learning assignment. The challenge was inspired by Caine Monroy, who at the age of 9, created an arcade out of cardboard in his father’s auto shop. What initially started as a small project without customers turned into a movement after a documentary filmmaker discovered Caine’s arcade and brought in customers. This eventually led to the creation of the global cardboard challenge.
Dr. Leah Hanes, CEO of Two Bit Circus Foundation and one of Caine’s mentors, highlighted the importance of hands-on learning in sparking creativity and innovation among students. The challenge encourages children to think creatively, collaborate, and invent new things using upcycled materials like cardboard.
Students at Richardson ISD elementary schools in gifted and talented services embraced the cardboard challenge with enthusiasm. Teacher Surekha Patel expressed amazement at the creativity, flexible thinking, and collaboration displayed by the students during the challenge. The project not only engages students in hands-on learning but also teaches them valuable skills that can be applied in various aspects of their lives.
Caine, now 21 years old and a recent graduate with a business degree, continues to be inspired by the impact of his cardboard arcade on future generations. The cardboard challenge serves as a reminder that simple materials like cardboard can be transformed into something extraordinary with a little imagination and creativity.
