Dallas is paying tribute to fallen police officers and firefighters by installing street signs throughout the city in their honor. The first two signs were recently installed in memory of Officer William Riddell and Firefighter John Dardeman, who lost their lives in the line of duty. The signs display their names, ranks, and the dates of their deaths. The city plans to install more signs honoring a total of 160 first responders. Interim City Manager Kimberly Tolbert stated that these signs serve as a reminder of the commitment and sacrifice made by these individuals to keep the community safe.
Officer Riddell, the second Dallas police officer killed in the line of duty in 1892, has a descendant who is also a police officer. His great, great, great, great-grandson, Officer Kyle Koiner, expressed gratitude for the recognition of his ancestor’s sacrifice. Firefighter Dardeman, the first Dallas firefighter killed in 1925, unfortunately has no known descendants. The city is working to find and honor the family members of all fallen first responders through these street sign toppers.
