19-year-old Kaeden Farish of Azle has become the first person in Tarrant County to be convicted of murder for dealing fentanyl, following the death of 17-year-old Dustin Anderton from an overdose. The incident occurred in Bedford earlier this year, with Farish providing fentanyl-laced pills that led to Anderton’s death on January 20. This case marks the first time that the new law allowing prosecutors to charge individuals with murder for causing a fentanyl-related death has been utilized in Tarrant County.
Farish pleaded guilty and was ultimately sentenced to 19 years in prison. The Bedford Police Department worked diligently to gather the necessary evidence to support the murder charge, emphasizing the challenges involved in pursuing such cases. Despite the prevalence of fentanyl overdoses, with a significant increase in fentanyl-related deaths in Texas over the past decade, there has been a recent decline in these numbers, aligning with national trends.
Prosecutors hope that charging individuals for murder in fentanyl-related deaths will serve as a deterrent to dealers and manufacturers, ultimately leading to a decrease in fatalities. Police Chief Bobby Lapenna highlighted the importance of putting drug dealers on notice, signaling a shift in the way law enforcement approaches cases involving overdoses. The collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and prosecutors aim to combat the fentanyl crisis and hold those responsible accountable.
