Albania’s President Ilir Meta has declared his confidence in his innocence after being arrested by the country’s Special Prosecutor for Corruption (SPAK). Meta, who has served as President since 2017, is facing charges of corruption and abuse of power.
In a statement released by his office, Meta maintained his position that he has done nothing wrong and expressed his belief that the charges against him are politically motivated. He stated that he is fully cooperating with the authorities and is committed to the rule of law.
The President’s arrest has sparked a major political crisis in Albania, with opposition parties calling for his resignation. Meta’s supporters have staged protests in his defense, claiming that he is being targeted for his efforts to combat corruption.
The SPAK, which was established in 2019 to investigate high-level corruption cases, has not released specific details about the charges against Meta. However, the arrest comes amid ongoing tensions between the President and Prime Minister Edi Rama, with the two leaders clashing over various issues, including election reforms and judicial appointments.
Meta’s arrest has also raised concerns among international observers, who have urged Albanian authorities to ensure a fair and transparent legal process. The European Union and United States have called for a swift resolution to the crisis and emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law in Albania.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Meta’s legal case will impact the political landscape in Albania and whether he will be able to maintain his innocence in the face of the charges against him.
