Actress Bethany Joy Lenz has opened up about her experience being in a cult for 10 years while starring on “One Tree Hill.” In a recent interview with People, Lenz revealed that she defended being in the cult to her co-stars, despite their suspicions. She joined the religious group in Los Angeles at age 20 after meeting the lead pastor at a Bible study. The group initially involved singing, worshipping, and conversations about God, but soon morphed into something more controlling.
Lenz eventually left the cult in 2012, one year after giving birth to her daughter Rosie. She split from her husband, who was also a cult member, that same year. Last year, Lenz disclosed on a podcast that her “One Tree Hill” castmates supported her after she left the group, providing her with a sense of safety and encouragement.
Her memoir, titled “Dinner for Vampires,” set to be released on October 22, describes Lenz’s journey to finding the courage to leave the cult to protect her child from a similar fate. The book delves into the deep trauma she experienced during her time in the cult and how it impacted her relationship with God and understanding of faith.
Lenz’s story sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals who are members of controlling groups and the importance of finding support and courage to break free from such influences.
