The city of Khartoum North in Sudan is facing a healthcare crisis as the only functioning hospital, Bahri Hospital, is overwhelmed with patients, including malnourished children like Jaber. The hospital is the only one left in the city due to attacks on healthcare facilities throughout the country during 18 months of conflict between the army and the paramilitary RSF. Patients face challenges reaching the hospital, including fighting, artillery shelling, and overcrowding. Displacement of over 11 million people has led to a shortage of medical staff and contributed to hospital closures. Dr. Hadeel Malik, the hospital’s emergency health director, describes the critical shortage of medical resources and the impact on healthcare workers’ safety. Despite challenges, efforts have been made to set up health centers in response to the crisis. Patients like Karima Ikram Ahmed Adam call for international aid to address the dire situation and support the overwhelmed healthcare system. The community has come together to support each other in the absence of adequate healthcare, but more aid is needed to address the overwhelming number of sick children and patients in need of medical care. The plea for assistance highlights the urgent need for support in Sudan’s healthcare system as it struggles to cope with the consequences of the conflict.
