Concerns over grant spending have caused delays in Dallas park improvements.

A $20 million investment in park improvements in southern Dallas has been delayed, leading to calls for an audit by Dallas City Councilman Adam Bazaldua. State Rep. Yvonne Davis secured the federal funding for the project after witnessing poor conditions in a Dallas park. However, Bazaldua raised concerns about the unusual level of involvement from Davis’ office, resulting in delays. Davis, on the other hand, blames city staff for the setbacks.

During a recent City Council meeting, Davis explained her motivation for securing the funding, citing issues like broken swing sets and outdated restrooms in local parks. She also criticized the city staff’s proposal to spend $300,000 on a restroom, emphasizing the need for accountability.

Bazaldua, however, defended the high cost, stating that it included infrastructure upgrades to bring in water. He also expressed concerns about Davis’ involvement in the city’s procurement process, calling for a full audit to investigate any potential impropriety.

Supporters of Davis spoke out at the meeting, highlighting the urgent need for park improvements to address safety hazards like erosion near a creek where children play soccer. While Bazaldua reassured that the $20 million grant is secured, he emphasized the importance of avoiding further delays and ensuring the successful implementation of the projects.

The issue remains ongoing as city officials work to address concerns raised by both Bazaldua and Davis and move forward with much-needed park improvements in southern Dallas.
