Hungary remains on high alert for flooding as Storm Boris heads south, with Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony warning of the potential for the biggest flood of the decade. The Danube water levels are expected to peak at 8.5 meters near the city, prompting flood defense measures along 540 kilometers of Hungary’s rivers. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has issued a third-degree alert along 200 kilometers of rivers and approved the opening of an emergency reservoir along the Leitha river.
Traffic restrictions have been put in place in the Gyor-Moson-Sopron and Komárom-Esztergom counties bordering the Danube, as well as in the Danube bend area. International train services between Hungary and Czech Republic, Poland, and Germany are also expected to be affected. The government is working to mitigate the potential impact of the flooding and ensure the safety of residents in at-risk areas.
