New report shows Dallas County’s opioid crisis is escalating

A recent report released by the Dallas County Health and Human Services and the Recovery Resource Council highlights the worsening opioid crisis in Dallas. Data shows that non-fatal overdoses have nearly doubled from 2018 to 2023, hospitals are seeing an increase in emergency room patients with opioid overdoses, and overdose deaths continue to rise. Fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid, has become a major concern as its presence has increased in various drugs including cocaine, meth, and even marijuana.

Lori Lynn Armstrong, a former opioid addict, shared her story of addiction and recovery, emphasizing the need for easier access to treatment without the stigma of shame. The Recovery Resource Council, a non-profit organization, offers treatment and recovery services to those struggling with addiction.

To address the ongoing crisis, a community forum titled ‘Dallas Fights Fentanyl’ was held to raise awareness about the dangers of opioids and fentanyl in schools. There is a call for greater access to mental health and substance abuse treatment resources to support those battling addiction.

Funding from settlements with pharmaceutical companies over opioid-related issues is hoped to bring much-needed resources to support recovery efforts. However, there are gaps in services, such as the lack of facilities tailored for Spanish-only speakers seeking help for opioid addiction.

Overall, the report underscores the critical need to address the opioid crisis in Dallas County and highlights the importance of prioritizing mental health, access to treatment, and community support in overcoming addiction.
