Sha’Carri Richardson takes home the silver in her first Olympic appearance

Dallas native Sha’Carri Richardson won the silver medal in the Women’s 100m Final at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. St. Lucia’s Julien Alfred took home the gold, making it St. Lucia’s first-ever Olympic medal. Richardson ran a quick race of 10.87 seconds but couldn’t catch Alfred, who had beaten her in the semifinal earlier in the day. USA’s Melissa Jefferson took the bronze. Richardson’s journey to the Olympics has not been easy – she missed the Tokyo Olympics due to a failed drug test after using marijuana to cope with her mother’s death. However, she bounced back and qualified for the Paris Games, where she was a favorite to win gold. Richardson will also compete in the 4×100-meter relay for the US team. She attended Kathleen Joy Gilliam Collegiate Academy in Dallas, where she ran track and became an eight-time state champion. In November 2023, Dallas named the track at Carter High School after Richardson, declaring the day as Sha’Carri Richardson Day. Richardson’s determination and resilience have led her to this milestone, and she continues to inspire others with her story of overcoming adversity to achieve success on the track.
