Opposition Leader in Venezuela Participates in Rally Demanding Election Results to be Overturned

Thousands of supporters rallied in Caracas on Saturday in support of an opposition candidate they believe won the presidential election in Venezuela by a landslide. Despite authorities declaring President Nicolás Maduro the winner, no voting tallies have been produced to confirm his victory. The government has arrested hundreds of opposition supporters and threatened to imprison opposition leaders. Opposition leader María Corina Machado, who has been barred from running for office for 15 years, made a public appearance at the rally, expressing concerns for her safety. The opposition’s headquarters was ransacked by masked assailants the day before the rally. Machado addressed the crowd, promising a new era for Venezuela. After the rally ended, she was quickly whisked away on a motorcycle. Maduro also called for his supporters to attend another march in Caracas on the same day. The political situation in Venezuela remains tense, with both sides claiming victory in the election.
