Australia has imposed sanctions on Israeli settlers in the West Bank, following the International Court of Justice’s nonbinding opinion that all Israeli settlement activity on Palestinian land is illegal. The sanctions target seven individuals and a hardline settler group responsible for violence against Palestinians. Other countries, including the US, EU, UK, France, Japan, and Canada, have also imposed limited sanctions on settlers and entities. The ICJ ruling reinforces that Israeli settlements are illegal under international law.
Critics argue that these sanctions have not curbed violence or stopped settlements, as Israeli government and settlers continue to attack Palestinians and seize land at an alarming rate. The war on Gaza has led to widespread casualties and displacement in the West Bank, with thousands of structures destroyed and people displaced. Israel’s recent seizure of Palestinian land in the Jordan Valley is the largest in over 30 years.
Israeli officials, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who are allies of violent settlers, have pushed back against potential sanctions from the Biden administration. They have vowed to prevent the formation of a sovereign Palestinian state and threatened to dismantle the Palestinian Authority if sanctions are imposed on Israeli government officials.
Despite international condemnation and sanctions, the situation in the West Bank remains dire, with ongoing violence, displacement, and land seizures continuing unabated. The lack of effective measures to address these issues raises concerns about the commitment of Israel’s Western allies to uphold international law and support a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
